Taking the 80 out to Arches and Canyonlands after Christmas- It’s all I’ve been able to focus on for the past two weeks.

Some of the more primitive roads and trails in Arches, then White Rim in Canyonlands, wrapping up in SLC.

9 days and a wake up, I’ll be out in Big Bend. It gets to where I can’t concentrate on anything else sometimes.

Do you ski backcountry a lot? I know there’s quite a bit of very accessible terrain around SLC, but I also hear that it can get crowded (I mean, not like standing in the lift line at Breckenridge crowded, but enough to be annoying).
For me, I find myself going backcountry less and less every year. I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting out of shape, or my risk tolerance factor is declining, or because it’s harder to find ski buddies these days (maybe all 3?), but mostly I just can’t be bothered. I’ve had some really rewarding days in the backcountry, but I have a hard time getting motivated to earn my turns these days.
I also have a s**t ton of $$$ wrapped up in my AT gear, and the temptation to sell it is very high.

I still prefer it to the resorts. Its “crowded” but not overly so. I don’t si much at all these days, but when I do I prefer AT

I’ve been to Arches, but it was with a rental Passat. That road is definitely on our agenda this go-around.

If your going south to north (not recommended by the park) I’d say very adventurous Subaru with a chance of underbody damage depending on if you go all the way or turn around near the end. If going north to south you’ll want 4runner or better, or great skid protections

Dude! What touring places do you like to go in MT?
i would be willing to drive up to Missoula over a weekend to be your ski buddy and I’m sure it wouldn’t be hard to talk Hammerheadfistpunch into it either.
My grandma has a cabin in Island Park where I grew up doing a lot of snowmobiling but I know you can’t sled on the Montana side of the divide so there are some lines that I have my eye on for the last couple years I would like to tour. We could definitely meet up there.

Whoa - no way! My grandparents used to live on the south shore of Hebgen Lake, about 15 miles north of West Yellowstone. When I was a kid I used to spend all my summers up there. Crazy to think we were probably just over the mountains from each other many times. Unfortunately, my mom and uncle sold the house about 10 years ago. :(
(In truth, the house was falling into the ground, but they really should have kept the property...)
I always thought there were a lot of great looking lines up in that Sheep Mt/Coffin Mt/Bald Pk area, but never tried to get in there.
In any case, Missoula itself really only has one decent touring destination, and that’s up on Lolo Pass (Hwy 12). It tends to be the default around here because it only takes about 40 minutes to drive up there. Decent, mellow terrain, if not a ton of vertical, so lots of laps. It’s great for a day trip.

Otherwise, it’s more of a hoof down to the southern Bitterroots, Lost Trail Pass, or up to Downing Mountain Lodge area near Hamilton:
http://downing-mountain-lodge.com/
The real hidden gem is up in the Swan Range, where YurtSki has a concession near the Bob Marshall Wilderness area. Such amazing lines up there.
Otherwise, there’s some more limited stuff near Montana Snowbowl, up on Lookout Pass to the west, way up around Whitefish, and on Rogers Pass closer to Helena.
Have you ever done any sled-supported touring? I think I’ve been on a snowmobile twice in my life, but sometimes it looks awfully tempting, especially when there’s a long skin just to get to the steep stuff...

My dad had a 2002 Polaris RMK with a busted crank that I told him I’d take off his hands so I could use it touring . I found a supplier of cranks and all the parts needed to repair for $700 but then my dad talked me out of it. Told me it wasn’t worth the upkeep.
There’s a pretty mellow line on the Lions head Ridge right on the divide. Would be a pretty hefty tour but with the help of a sled it would be pretty easy

But to answer your question...no i have never done sled assisted touring.
Looks there is some good stuff up there. I would be all about one of those yurt trips. We have a couple places up Logan Canyon that Utah State University (my alma matter) used to run but I have never done it. The weekends get booked quick and if I were to go, I would prefer to go more of a last minute thing so I have a better handle of the snow conditions. i would hate to book a yurt trip in advance and then when i go its a black avy conditions type of day or tracked out because it didn’t snow for a month
